Box 1: The Operating System capturing Business and Operation

This phase, also known as the “dancing field,” captures the essence of business and operations. It is where core processes such as sales, purchasing, delivery, and inventory take place—the birthplace of raw data. Key questions at this stage include:

  • Are we capturing all transactions accurately and completely?
  • Are we using the latest sector-specific platforms to optimize these processes?

This foundational phase lays the groundwork for the next two stages. Capturing all data with precision and accuracy is critical, as any gaps here can disrupt the flow of subsequent phases.

Box 2: The Accounting System, the world of General Ledger and Sub Ledger

Here, raw data transitions into a structured framework. Transactions are transformed into journal entries (JEs)—thousands of them daily—and these are then summarized into financial statements such as the Profit & Loss Account and Balance Sheet. This phase offers a snapshot of periodic performance and ensures legal and regulatory compliance, contributing to good corporate citizenship. Essentially, this stage converts raw transactions into meaningful financial outputs for both internal decision-makers and external stakeholders.

Box 3: Enterprise Performance Management (EPM) System

Also referred as Financial Planning & Analysis (FP&A), this is the phase of maturity and intelligence. Data from Box 1 and Box 2 converge here, making the quality of insights highly dependent on how well data was captured and processed in the earlier stages. This phase enables actionable intelligence, facilitating strategic decisions, short- and long-range planning, and analysis of actual results against budgets and industry benchmarks. It also supports competitive analysis and drives profitable growth and cash optimization. At this stage, the business evolves from chaos to clarity, achieving precision in decision-making.
